No criminal activity found at Fairfield ballot facility after report: State police

This comes as the race for the city's First Selectman is headed for a recount on Tuesday.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Fairfield police were investigating a possible break-in after a broken window screen was discovered at the town facility storing election equipment and ballots. Connecticut State Police later investigated the site and determined there was no criminal activity at the facility.

A statement from Fairfield Police Chief Robert Kalarmas said he requested Thursday the State's Attorney's Office and Connecticut State Police to respond to the facility on Mona Terrace. The town facility is known to house election equipment and ballots, according to Kalarmas, which are being stored for an upcoming recount.

"Noting the incredible sensitivity of such a report, and given the ongoing closely contested race for First Selectman in town, I made the decision to immediately notify the State's Attorney Office for the Judicial District of Fairfield, to inform them of the matter and to request the assistance of their office," Kalarmas said.

Upon investigating the facility on 100 Mona Terrace, a rear window screen was found damaged but it was later determined that it did not appear to be a result of criminal activity, according to Connecticut State Police. There were no building entry points that were compromised, state police added.

“Our office has been in touch with the Fairfield Judicial District State’s Attorney and the Connecticut State Police on the investigation in Fairfield near the town’s secure ballot storage site. The agencies report no evidence of burglary or compromise of the ballots," the Office of the Secretary of the State said in a statement midday Friday.

The State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC) has also been alerted.

"On behalf of the Fairfield Police Department, I wish to thank and acknowledge State's Attorney Corradino and our State Police for their immediate attention and response,” Kalamas added.

A recount for Fairfield's First Selectman will still take place on Tuesday, the Office of the Secretary of the State said. This is due to Democrat Bill Gerber garnering a 42-vote margin of victory with 8,966 votes, while incumbent Brenda Kupchick got 8,924 votes, according to a report from the Connecticut Post.
