CONNECTICUT, USA — Incumbent Sen. Chris Murphy and Republican candidate Matthew Corey discussed issues that matter most to Connecticut voters in a U.S. Senate debate in New Haven Wednesday.
Murphy and Corey debated this evening and touched on a number points on topics including safety in schools, housing, gun violence and the economy.
Murphy is seeking his third term as senator, while Corey thinks it's time for a change.
“When your a small business guy and you’ve worked in the private sector, you understand the consequences of the bills you pass in Washington, how they affect your life every single day," Corey said.
Murphy said when it comes to price gauging, investing in tax cuts is crucial.
“To put more money in people’s pockets we can certainly do matter to tackle the price of medicine,” Murphy said.
When it comes to social media safety, Murphy believes the government must step in.
“I have a piece of legislation that requires parental consent for any young person to be on social media before they are 17 that bans any children under 13 for being on social media,” he said.
Another hot topic discussed at the debate was crime.
“A lot of this crime is being committed by illegal aliens and the Venezuelan gangs,” Corey said. “Over 600 arrest in New York City by Venezuelan gang members... I don’t know where the argument is. That crime is down.”
Corey believes it’s time someone with a business background is sent to Washington and he believes former President Donald Trump will be the next president. As for Murphy, he says he fears if Trump is reelected, the country will be more divided.
