WATERBURY, Conn. — The Brass City has a new mayor-elect.
Democrat Paul Pernerewski was elected by Waterbury city voters to succeed current Mayor Neil O’Leary, who announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection.
Pernerewski received 5,634 votes, narrowly beating a challenge from Republican Dawn Maiorano, who received 5,036 votes. He also beat unaffiliated candidates Jeisha Gilliams and Karen Jackson, who received 494 and 86 votes, respectively. All precincts were reporting.
Pernerewki, 62, currently serves as the president of the Board of Aldermen and represents District 3.
Ahead of the election, he said if he was elected, he would work to revitalize the city’s downtown for residents and businesses, continue the Waterbury Greenway project, and improve economic development.
His goals also include improving education by continuing work with Waterbury Promise, introducing a civics curriculum in the classroom, and providing mental health funding to schools.
When it comes to public safety, Pernerewski vows to "take an unwavering stance against repeat and violent offenders by demanding changes to the state’s policies that allow for leniency for the worst offenders." He said the city would continue to support PAL and other youth programs as well as continue support for public safety officers.
