HARTFORD, Conn. — A Jamaican citizen pleaded guilty Wednesday in Hartford federal court to illegally reentering the United States after being deported, according to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Court documents and statements note that Jason Caston Williams, 51, who also goes by Jason Fitzgerald and Terry Barrington Stewart, was admitted to the U.S. as a Lawful Permanent Resident in October 1982.
Williams was convicted in Connecticut state court in June 1991 of second-degree robbery, according to prosecutors, who said he received a 10-year prison sentence, execution suspended and five years of probation. Williams reportedly violated his probation in March 1997 and was sentenced to three years in prison.
Prosecutors said that in September 1997, Williams was convicted in New York of second-degree burglary and criminal possession of a weapon, and subsequently was sentenced to 30 months to five years improvement.
Williams was then deported to Jamaica in May 2001 after an immigration judge ordered him removed.
According to prosecutors, Williams illegally reentered the U.S. and was arrested by Norwalk police on Oct. 20, 2022. He was charged with second-degree assault related to him using a knife to assault another individual.
Williams was convicted of that charge on Oct. 11, 2023, and was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended after two years and three years of probation.
Sentencing is not yet scheduled, but when it occurs, Williams faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years for illegal reentry. Prosecutors said he is currently detained.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
