WESTPORT - Piglet, a double dapple Dachshund, born deaf and blind, is giving back to the community through the Piglet Mindset.

Adopted by Melissa Shapiro and her husband, Piglet quickly gained national attention through Instagram, with the account gaining one-hundred and seventy-thousand follows and climbing.

Melissa Shapiro explained the Piglet mindset “the piglet mindset educational outreach that we have that really revolves around the lesson plans and PowerPoint we have online there’s texts showing how he overcomes and challenges and faces his challenges with a positive attitude. So, growth mindset is about that using what you have and propelling yourself forward rather being stuck at what you don’t have”

Now, through a series of PowerPoint presentations found on Piglets website and school visits, Piglet is teaching children about inclusion, acceptance and kindness.

This is something Piglet experiences everyday with his six furry brothers and sisters, “it's an authentic thing that is actually happening and it catches the kids in a very special way compared to if they just read about it in a story because this is a real story happening.”

Shapiro explained, “he is really owned what he has...his sense of smell touch and taste he has learned how to use them in an optimal way versus they can smell like he but he knows how to use to help him overcome what he doesn't have and what he can’t do.”

Now that it’s 2020, our first order of business is to enter into Piglet’s 3rd Birthday Zone. We don’t know which day he was born, but we know he showed up on earth in January 2017 with a bang. The tiny pink baby dog was rescued from a hoarding situation along with his dog mom, 3 litter mates, and quite a few other doxie/chi mixes. Most of you know that Piglet came to CT to be our foster puppy. I expected an adorable tiny puppy who would be fun to care for, briefly. I actually said to Warren (direct quote), “How much trouble can a 1 pound puppy be? It will be easy to find a forever home for such a cute puppy.” I will admit, he was and still is one of the cutest dogs I have ever met. But there was and still is nothing easy about Piglet. There are other words to describe him though. Here are a few- Adorable, Determined, Positive, Inspiring, Interactive, Engaging, Intuitive, Resilient, Flexible, Perseverant, Optimistic, Funny, Precious, and Amazing. Oh- this reminds me of A Piglet Mindset! We’ll be thinking about some interesting ways to celebrate Piglet’s third birthday. Fundraising and Fun will definitely be at the top of the list. Suggestions are welcome. In the meantime, Happy New Year to all of Piglet’s friends in Pink Piglity Land! . . Piglet Mindset T-shirts are available on Bonfire until tomorrow night! If you don’t have a shirt, you need one. Plain and simple! Link in bio. . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #pigletmindset #birthdayzone #babydog #rescuedog #foster #adopt #disableddog #adoptdontshop

This about sums up Piglity’s 2019! He may not be able to hear or see, but he sure knows how to pose for a picture! Our tiny pink puppy is a dignified, inspiring, precious, sweet little dog who has touched thousands of people all around the world. When I broke the news to Warren that he was no longer Piglet’s foster dad, I promised myself that Piglet would have a productive meaningful life. This year we have seen our tiny pink boy and his positive Piglet Mindset move closer towards that goal. We are thankful beyond words for all the support we have received from Piggy’s friends around the world, as well as from social media and news organizations. Happy New Year to everyone in Pink Piglity Land! Stay tuned for more of our 2019 review. I just had to get this picture on the page- it is my absolute favorite Piglet portrait of the year!! Also, don’t forget to order a Piglet Mindset T-shirt. Our current fundraiser ends on Thursday night. Piggy’s Pink Countdown to 2020 has begun! 2019 has been a year of tremendous growth for Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy. Not only have his social media pages increased by over 125,000 followers, his Piglet Mindset Educational Outreach Program has made its way into classrooms all around the world. Piglet and his positive mindset have been featured in People’s online and print magazines, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in numerous articles and viral videos this year. Piggy started out as a tiny screaming pink baby dog who thankfully was rescued by a very special veterinarian rescuer in Georgia. He was passed along to me in what I affectionately describe as a moment of extreme weakness. My husband Warren reluctantly said ok and Piglet arrived just in time to disrupt our somewhat calm household. But, as unexpectedly as he came, the chaos Piglet brought has unexpectedly been channeled into one of the most rewarding projects I’ve been involved with.💕😊💕 Our network of animal welfare advocates and educators is substantial, enabling us to “make a difference” for so many. Thank you to all of Piggy’s friends and supporters. We are looking forward to even more in 2020! Here’s Piglet’s signature pink baby picture to start off our review of 2019! No it was not taken in 2019 but it captures the full essence of our tiny pink dog. Wishing everyone a Peaceful Pink Baby Piglity Goodnight. 💕😴💤🌙💕 . . Question of the week- What breed is Piglet? He is a rescued doxie chihuahua mix. He is also the result of two dapple colored dogs breeding in a hoarding situation. While we love our tiny pink boy, truthfully, we are strong advocates of spay and neuter. And certainly we are trying to educate about the severe consequences of breeding dapple to dapple, which can result in deaf and blind dogs. So- PLEASE- let’s avoid creating more profoundly disabled dogs by educating those who are unaware of the double dapple situation. It is crucial to stay away from breeders who intentionally breed dapple to dapple. The breedmix is cute but let’s find homes for the ones already on the the ground.💕💕 . . #pinkpigletpuppy #doubledapple #doubledappleawareness #rescuedogs #hoardingsituation
