WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Lifelong UConn fan Glenn Marcella, a UConn graduate and West Hartford resident, had a game plan in place months ago to help celebrate the team’s latest national title.
Marcella ordered his personalized “Husky 6” license plates from the DMV back in November, confidently anticipating that the UConn Basketball Team would reign victorious and secure its sixth national championship.
“I kind of kept it under wraps,” said Marcella, who owns “Gym 67” in Hartford. He then added, “When they won, I put the plates on the car, and people didn’t think it was real; my friends thought it was photoshopped, but is an official DMV plate.”
Marcella said that slowly but surely other motorists on the road are taking note of his dedication to UConn Basketball as he drives his blue Volvo station wagon around town.
“Any beep I get I’m turning my head; it’s a nod, it’s a fist bump, it’s a thumbs up," he said.
Marcella, who has three daughters, two already attending UConn and the youngest bound for Storrs in the fall, said the entire season has been a wild ride for any fan.
"It’s been an absolute frenzy, an absolute joy – what a treat this team has provided for us," he said.
When asked what he'll do if UConn completes the “Three-peat” and wins again next year, Marcella laughed, “If we get number 7, I will get a license plate for sure.”
