GLENDALE, Ariz. — Tristen Newton, UConn’s AP First-Team All-American, added to his accolades on Saturday prior to the Huskies’ Final Four game against Alabama.
Newton was named the 2024 recipient of the Bob Cousy Award, recognizing the fifth-year transfer student from East Carolina as the top point guard in Division I men’s basketball.
The El Paso, Texas native led UConn in points per game (15) and assists (6) this season and was second on the team in rebounding (6.7) trailing only sophomore center Donovan Clingan. Newton is only the third player in UConn history to win the Bob Cousy award, joining Kemba Walker in 2011 and Shabazz Napier in 2014.
In a team release, Newton said, “It is an honor to receive this recognition. Credit to my teammates and coaches for always putting me in a position to succeed and put the team in the best position to win games. This would not be possible without the success of our team, and I am hungry to keep going in the Final Four.”
Newton is the program’s all-time leader in triple doubles with four over the past two seasons. During the 2023-2024 campaign, he recorded triple doubles against both Manhattan and Villanova.
In previous press conferences, head coach Dan Hurley has noted that Newton’s accomplishments over the past two seasons are unrivaled by any UConn point guard, high praise when considering the accomplishments of Walker and Napier. Both Walker and Napier won the national championship the season they were awarded the Bob Cousy Award; Newton will look to do the same.
This season, Newton scored at least 20 points eight different times, steering the No. 1 most efficient offense in the nation, according to KenPom. He also notched 11 double doubles this season.
UConn (35-3) is the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced last weekend to the program’s seventh Final Four.
As a three-time All-American at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., Bob Cousy won the NCAA Tournament in 1947, winning 23 consecutive games to end the season.
As a Boston Celtic from 1950 - 1963, Cousy won six NBA titles and was a 13-time All-Star. He was named to the All-NBA First Team 10 times and twice was named to the All-NBA Second Team. His No. 14 is retired by the Boston Celtics.
The Bob Cousy Award was established in 2004.
