STORRS, Conn. — Gordon Sammis has been named UConn Football’s new offensive coordinator, as was announced on Saturday by head coach Jim Mora, according to a release from the UConn Division of Athletics.

Sammis served as the Huskies’ offensive line coach for the past two seasons. In 2023, he was also the run game coordinator.

The announcement comes exactly one month after former UConn offensive coordinator Nick Charlton left the program to become an offensive assistant/run game specialist for the Cleveland Browns.

During his two seasons with UConn, Sammis coached offensive guard Christian Haynes, who was named an AP and Sporting News All-American in both 2022 and 2023. Haynes is the third Husky in the FBS era to be named as an All-American and the only UConn Football player to do it in back-to-back seasons. Haynes is expected to be drafted into the NFL in April, the release said.

In 2022, Sammis coached an offensive line unit that helped the team rank 33rd in the country in rushing, averaging 191 yards per game. The UConn offensive line ranked 29th in the NCAA in sacks allowed in 2022, allowing 1.38 per game.

The offensive line unit improved last year, ranking ninth in the country by allowing just 12 sacks all season, according to the release.

Prior to being employed at UConn, Sammis spent three seasons as an offensive line coach at William & Mary, where he was the run game coordinator during his last two years with the program.

In 2021, William & Mary led the CAA in rushing yards with 203.7 per game. When Sammis arrived at William & Mary, the Tribe averaged close to 100 more total yards per game than it did in the season prior to his arrival.

Before joining William & Mary, Sammis spent two years as the offensive line coach at Lafayette College, where the Leopards ranked first in the Patriot League in fewest sacks allowed and fewest tackles for a loss allowed.

In 2015 and 2016 Sammis was the offensive line coach at Virginia Military Institute, where he oversaw the team’s running game and pass protection plans. From 2012-2014, Sammis was the tight ends coach and offensive line coach at Columbia University, where he was the team’s recruiting coordinator for three seasons, the release said.

Sammis graduated from the University of Virginia in 2007 with a degree in government after a playing career that lasted from 2003-2007. He was a graduate assistant coach for the Cavaliers from 2010-2012, where he earned a master’s degree in education. He worked as an offensive line assistant during his first season on the staff and worked with the tight ends the following year.
