Scottie Scheffler shares mindset after winning the Travelers Championship

Scheffler won the tournament at TPC River Highlands in a playoff Sunday but said afterwards that he doesn’t set long-term goals or define himself by results.

CROMWELL, Conn. — The world’s number one golfer won again Sunday, as Scottie Scheffler took home the trophy at the 2024 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

Scheffler defeated good friend Tom Kim in a playoff for his sixth PGA Tour victory of 2024.

Following his latest tournament win, Scheffler delved into the mindset that has enabled him to perform at such a high level this year.

“I’ve talked a good amount about how I don’t really define myself by my wins or by my losses. I do my best to compete and have the right attitude,” Scheffler said. “I don’t set long-term goals. I never have. I’ve always been best when I stay in the present, and I have dreams and aspirations, and those will probably never change, but as far as goals for the year, nothing really changes for me.”

Scheffler steadily climbed the leaderboard over the course of the four-day tournament in Connecticut. He led for most of the final round before Kim evened the score late. The comeback attempt didn’t deter Scheffler, who took care of business in the playoff.

When the tournament ended, Scheffler spoke about how it unfolded. He said he had to be on point for the entirety of play at the Travelers.

“I feel like sometimes in these tournaments you really have to be on for all four days. You have an off day and, all of a sudden, it’s harder to catch up,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler was thrilled to win using a different style of play than he has relied on in past victories. He said he hasn’t always been able to “get it across the line” in tournaments that are more of a shootout like the Travelers.

“I feel like most of my wins are on more difficult tracks, so it’s nice to be able to come here where putting is so important and holing the right putts when you need to is so important. There’s definitely a little bit of extra satisfaction being able to win on a different style of golf than some of my previous (victories),” Scheffler said.

Moving forward, Scheffler has his schedule all planned out. He looks forward to competing in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris later this summer. Scheffler said it will be extraordinary to represent his country.

“Wearing the flag is something that very few people get to experience. I’m very proud to be going across (the ocean) and representing the USA at the Olympics,” Scheffer said. “I’m very grateful. That’s something I’ve been looking forward to (for) a long time. I was hoping to be part of that team, and it will be very special going over and competing with the other three guys. Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring home some medals for the USA.”
