UConn's top 3 men’s basketball assistants earn new deals

Associate head coach Kimani Young, assistant coach Luke Murray and assistant coach Tom Moore each received a new contract.

STORRS, Conn. — On Monday, UConn announced that it reached a new contract agreement with men’s basketball Head Coach Dan Hurley that lasts through the 2029-2030 season.

Including his base salary, additional money for speaking, consulting and media obligations and a retention bonus, Hurley’s new contract is worth $50 million over six years. There is room for more compensation if Hurley meets performance-based incentives.

The university also announced on Monday that it extended associate head coach Kimani Young and assistant coaches Luke Murray and Tom Moore. Under the leadership of Hurley, the Young, Murray and Moore partnership has helped UConn achieve back-to-back national titles. Hurley has stated often that he considers his coaching staff to be the best in the nation.

Young and Murray will each earn $400,000 per year as a base salary. Additionally, they can earn between $300,000 and $450,000 more annually over the next three years for speaking, consulting and media appearances. Further opportunities could net them up to $50,000 more annually in performance bonuses and $100,000 each season in postseason bonuses.

Moore signed a one-year deal with a base salary worth $375,000 and is eligible to receive up to $50,000 more in postseason bonuses.

Young joined Hurley’s UConn coaching staff in April 2018 and was named associate head coach in September 2020. He is responsible for recruiting, practice planning and game strategy, according to his UConn bio.

Young is originally from Queens, N.Y. and arrived at UConn after five years as an assistant under Richard Pitino at the University of Minnesota. He also spent a year on Pitino’s staff at Florida International.

According to the contract’s terms, Young’s latest agreement with UConn will last through April 30, 2027, unless he is terminated prior to that. If Hurley leaves UConn, the contract says Young could be terminated.

Young’s $400,000 annual base salary is complemented by a $400,000 annual supplemental salary that increases by $25,000 each year. Young will earn his supplemental salary by completing media/speaking appearances, fundraising and development activities, public outreach and other similar responsibilities affiliated with his position.

He also will receive a retention bonus of $50,000 per year. He could receive another $50,000 annually if he meets performance goals established by Hurley and Athletic Director David Benedict.  Under each season the contract covers, if UConn advances to the NCAA Tournament, Young will receive an additional $10,000.

He’ll receive another $15,000 if the team advances to the Sweet 16 and $25,000 more for an Elite Eight appearance. If UConn makes the Final Four, Young will receive another bonus of $50,000.

Murray started as a college coach in 2007 shortly after graduating from Fairfield when he gained employment on Moore’s staff at Quinnipiac. Moore coached Quinnipiac from 2007 to 2017 before joining Hurley at Rhode Island and then UConn.

After one season, Murray left Quinnipiac to join Post University in 2008-2009 as an assistant coach before heading out west to the University of Arizona to serve as a graduate student in 2009-2010. Hurley first hired Murray as an assistant coach in 2010-2011 at Wagner. The following season, Murray left for Towson, where he served as an assistant until 2013.

For the 2013-2014 season, Hurley hired Murray again as an assistant at Rhode Island. Murray spent two seasons there before being hired as an assistant at Xavier under head coach Chris Mack. Murray spent three seasons at Xavier before following Mack to Louisville, where he served as an assistant and the recruiting coordinator through the 2020-2021 season.

Murray was hired by Hurley at UConn in 2021 and has remained in Storrs since. He began coordinating UConn’s offense prior to the 2022-2023 national championship season and assumed the same role last year, as UConn won it all again.

Under his new contract, Murray is employed through April 30, 2027, with a $400,000 base salary. Like Young, he can be terminated earlier, including if Hurley leaves. In the case that Hurley does embark to the NBA in the next several years, Murray and Young would be top candidates to take over the program.

Murray will also receive a $300,000 supplemental salary in the first year of his contract. In the second year, the supplemental salary will be $325,000, and in the third year, it will increase to $350,000. Like Young, the supplementary salary will cover Murray’s media/speaking appearances, fundraising and development activities, public outreach and other similar responsibilities associated with the position.

Murray will also receive an annual retention bonus of $50,000 and could receive another $50,000 annually if he meets performance goals established by Hurley and Athletic Director David Benedict. In each season, if UConn qualifies for the NCAA Tournament, Murray will receive an additional $10,000 and $15,000 more if the team goes to the Sweet 16. If UConn advances to the Elite Eight, Murray will receive an additional $25,000, and he will earn $50,000 more if the team makes the Final Four.

Moore is one of the most accomplished assistant coaches in the country, having won four national championship rings with UConn. He began his coaching career at Worcester State in 1987, serving as an assistant for one season before serving in the same role for one year at Assumption.

He returned to Worcester State as head coach from 1989 to 1994 before being hired onto Jim Calhoun’s staff at UConn. During his first stint at Connecticut, Moore was an assistant for 13 seasons through 2007. He was on the bench for UConn’s first two national titles in 1999 and 2004.

In 2007, Moore accepted the head coaching position at Quinnipiac, where he coached through the 2017 season. His biggest highlight at Quinnipiac was perhaps an NEC regular season title in 2010. Following his tenure at Quinnipiac, Moore joined Hurley’s staff at Rhode Island for the 2017-2018 season in which the team advanced to the Round of 32. He followed Hurley to UConn as an assistant in 2018 and remains there today, having helped lead the back-to-back 2023 and 2024 national championship teams.

This week, Moore signed a one-year deal worth $375,000 that is subject to termination if Hurley leaves. He could also receive more money, beginning with an extra $5,000 if UConn makes the NCAA Tournament. If UConn advances to the Sweet 16, Moore will make another $5,000, and he’ll receive $15,000 more if the team advances to the Elite Eight. If UConn appears in the Final Four, Moore will receive an additional $25,000.
