STORRS, Conn. — UConn women’s basketball star, Azzi Fudd, will miss the remaining 2023-2024 season after tearing her meniscus and ACL, the college announced Wednesday.
Fudd suffered from a medial meniscal tear and an anterior cruciate ligament tear in her right knee during practice on Nov. 14, which caused her to miss UConn's win over Maryland on Nov. 16.
Last year, the university junior missed weeks of play time after injuring the same right knee.
Fudd has averaged 13.1 points in the 42 games she has played for UConn.
"We’re all just so upset for Azzi. She worked hard to be healthy for this season, and it’s unfortunate when you put in a lot of hard work and have a setback like this,” head coach Geno Auriemma said. “Azzi loves the game and works tirelessly.”
He said he is confident Fudd will “come back better than ever.”
“We’ll obviously miss her presence on the court, but Azzi will continue to be a great teammate and important part of this team this season,” he said. “Our program will support Azzi through her recovery however we can.”
Fudd will be undergoing surgery at UConn Health at a later date.
Fudd's injury comes after the return of another UConn star, Paige Bueckers, who missed all of last season and 19 games during her sophomore campaign with knee injuries.
The No. 2-ranked Huskies don't have everybody they'd hoped for this season. Egyptian forward Jana El Alfy went down with a ruptured Achilles tendon this summer at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain, where she had averaged 21.4 points and 11.0 rebounds. She was expected to be a key part of the Huskies frontcourt this season.
UConn returns Ice Brady, last year's top recruit, who missed her freshman season with a dislocated knee. Forwards Aubrey Griffin, Anaya Patterson and Amari DeBerry are back, along with guards Caroline Ducharme and Ines Bettencourt.
UConn is traveling to the Cayman Islands for a game Friday against No. 2 UCLA.
