UConn’s Paige Bueckers, Aaliyah Edwards named to USBWA Women’s All-America teams

Bueckers earned a spot on the First Team while Edwards is on the Second Team.

STORRS, Conn. — UConn women’s basketball stars Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards are getting more accolades ahead of the NCAA tournament.

Bueckers, a redshirt junior, earned a spot in the 2023-24 USBWA Women’s All-America First Team, while Edwards, a senior, was selected to the Second Team. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced the teams on Tuesday.

This is the second time Bueckers has earned the honor. She was named an All-American as a freshman in 2021. She missed all of last season with an injury.

She returned this season with a vengeance, expanding her game and averaging 21.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.4 blocks and 2.2 steals per contest. She was selected as the Big East Player of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

On the USBWA Women’s All-America First Team, Bueckers is joined by Iowa’s Caitlyn Clark, LSU star Angel Reese, Cameroon Brink from Stamford, Kamilla Cardoso from South Carolina and USC’s JuJu Watkins.

Edwards, one of UConn’s most consistent players, ranks second on the team with a career-high 17 points per game and leads the Huskies with a career-high 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Kingston, Ontario native led the Big East with 16 double-doubles this season and was unanimously selected to the All-Big East First Team. She was selected for the USBWA Women’s All-America Third Team last year.

On the USBWA Women’s All-America Second Team, Edwards is joined by Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame, Indiana’s Mackenzie Holmes, Elizabeth Kitley from Virginia Tech and South Carolina’s Te-Hina Paopao.

The Huskies will face No. 14-seed Jackson State in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.
