CONNECTICUT, USA — The UConn men's and women's basketball teams both won on Super Bowl Sunday with two very much-needed victories.
The UConn men, reeling from a tough loss against Xavier, were going up against St. John's at Madison Square Garden. UConn had lost three of their last four and threatened to drop out of the AP Top 25.
Tyrese Martin ended up being the difference for UConn as he scored 17 points in the second half including four threes. Andre Jackson also contributed with a career-high 16 rebounds.
The game came down to the wire in typical Huskies fashion, but R.J. Cole was able to sink both of his free throws with 12 seconds left to put UConn up three. St. John's attempted a game-tying three at the end but missed and UConn was able to hang on.
Their next game is against Seton Hall on Wednesday.
The UConn women coming off their win against Depaul were looking to trend further in the right direction as they head closer to the NCAA tournament.
Freshman guard Azziz Fudd continued to impress, scoring 24 points with five rebounds and three assists to add.
UConn's offense from beyond the arc was the difference as they shot 10-20 from long range.
The Huskies moved to 18-5 on the season. Their next game isn't until Friday when they play Xavier.
