Historic Yale Bowl marks 110th anniversary

The Yale Bulldogs football team hosted their longtime rival, Harvard, for their first-ever game on Nov. 21, 1914.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — One hundred and ten years later, the Yale Bowl is standing strong.

Construction for the stadium started back in June of 1913. More than a year later, the Yale Bulldogs football team hosted their longtime rival, Harvard, for their first-ever game on Nov. 21, 1914.

When the Yale Bowl opened, it was the only shaped stadium that looked like a bowl. Four other schools were inspired by the look and followed suit, including the LA Coliseum, built in 1923; the Rose Bowl, located in Pasadena, Calif., built in 1922; the Michigan Stadium, built in 1927; and the Cotton Bowl, located in Dallas, Texas, built in 1930.

The New York Giants played 12 games on the field in 1973-1974, only going 1-11 while Yankee Stadium was being renovated and their new home was under construction in the Meadowlands.

Concerts that took place at the Yale Bowl included Simon and Garfunkel in the 60’s, Led Zeppelin in the 70's and an Eagles concert in the 80's.

Paul McCartney was scheduled to come to the Yale Bowl in 1990, but after a long and winding road, things didn’t work out.

The stadium spans 12.5 acres, measuring 930 by 750 feet, with a seating capacity at 61,446 after renovations brought it down from 70,869, Visit New Haven's website says. The amount of fans in the stadium peaked at 80,000 during a 1923 match against Army.

According to Yale, the federal government declared the stadium as a national landmark in 1987.
