SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. — A South Windsor native has been selected to be part of the 2021 astronaut class, NASA announced this week.
Jack Hathaway, a 39-year-old U.S. Navy pilot, is among the 10 new astronaut candidates from a field of more than 12,000 applicants.
According to his biography, Hathaway graduated from South Windsor High School in 2020 and earned his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. He earned a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
Hathaway went on to become a distinguished naval aviator who flew and deployed with VFA-14 aboard the USS Nimitz and WFA-136 aboard the USS Truman.
He has over 2,500 flight hours in 30 types of aircraft, more than 500 carrier arrested landings, and flew 39 combat missions.
He is married to Amy Hathaway and they have two children.
Another member of the class with a Connecticut connection is Andre Douglas, who graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 2008.
Douglas, 35, is a space systems engineer from Chesapeake, Virginia. He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
All 10 candidates will begin training in Houston in January to begin two years of training.
