Going green for Earth Day while wearing red

Volunteers from Travelers pitch in at Bushnell Park.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Volunteers from Travelers have turned Earth Day into a weeklong of events. Raking, mulching, and pulling weeds, Friday found a team of 30 Travelers employees pitching in at Bushnell Park.

“We’ve been back downtown in person for over a year now and there’s that pent-up energy that our employees have from the Pandemic – they want to be out in the community, they want to support Hartford," Erin Haberman, an assistant vice president for the Travelers Foundation said.

Travelers made a point to visit spots across Greater Hartford for Earth Day projects, including beautification efforts at Riverfront Park and at Knox Inc. Karen Tomasko, a volunteer from the Bushnell Park Conservancy, said keeping the park intact is a collaborative endeavor.

“The park is 37 acres,” said Tomasko and its volunteers that do the work.” She then added, “every corporation in Hartford has got to help us take care of this park – it’s the oldest publicly funded park in the US, it’s a gem.”

Standing steps from a wheelbarrow full of mulch about to be dumped into a flower bed, Haberman added, “we want to do our part to make our community better, stronger, and more resilient.”
