WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — Friday marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day that recognizes the critical role women and girls play in the fields of science and technology.
At CREC Discovery Academy in Wethersfield, they celebrate the STEM field on a daily basis.
"In our work, we don't silo our subjects. In school, sometimes subjects are siloed," said Clare Neseralla, STEM Coach at CREC Discovery Academy. "In our school, we try to integrate STEM. Most of us have a background in science, technology and math. Engineering, we don't realize how much engineering we do and at Discovery, we focus on engineering every week, kids go to a design lab class."
This week, the students at CREC have been doing what's called the "Take Apart" Lab, where they take old pieces of technology and pull them apart to see how they're made.
"Which we call backwards engineering," Neseralla said. "Everything that's made was made because of a problem that's solved by making the device.
The school is also working on getting their projects for The Connecticut Invention Convention, where five students will be picked to compete.
When asked about young girls and women getting into the field, Neseralla said she's seeing the change.
"There's more and more engineers that are women. I think exposure to building and creating and exploring technology and electronics can encourage girls to go into the field," Neseralla said.
