WEST HARTFORD, Conn — A car caught on fire causing lane closures on Interstate 84 eastbound in West Harford on Saturday morning.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation reported that the center and left lanes are closed and the time of reopening is unknown. Drivers are asked to seek different routes.
There are no reported injuries at this time according to state police.
Connecticut State Police will also be out patrolling the highways to enforce traffic laws through the Fourth of July weekend.
AAA predicts that nearly 48 million people will travel at least 50 miles or more from home over the weekend, slightly fewer than in 2019. AAA says car travel will set a record even with the national average price for gasoline hovering near $5.
Leisure travel has bounced back this year, and that means particularly big crowds over three-day holiday weekends.
According to AAA, almost 2.7 million New Englanders are expected to travel this holiday weekend.
“We are upping our patrols within the state. We have some DUI checkpoints that are going to be happening this weekend,” said Sgt. Christine Jeltema of Connecticut State Police.
