CONNECTICUT, USA — Connecticut state troopers responded to more than 5,000 service calls so far over the holiday weekend, including 254 motor vehicle crashes.
Statistics from July 1 through 5 a.m. on July 4 show troopers have responded to a total of 472 motor assists. Of the 254 crashes, 23 had injuries, and two were fatal.
The two fatal crashes took place on July 3 in Shelton and Norfolk.
In the Shelton crash, 59-year-old Jason Kline was killed after the motorcycle he was driving on Route 8 northbound collided with the vehicle in front of him.
State police said Nicholas Ponzi, 21, died after the vehicle he was driving to veered off Route 272 in Norfolk while attempting to turn right and struck a stone wall. He died on his injuries.
At least 45 people have been arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Twelve of those arrests stemmed from crashes.
About 211 people were cited for speeding, and 39 for not wearing a steal belt. Troopers also issued 146 citations for hazardous moving violations including unsafe lane changes, following too closely, and more.
Connecticut State Police ramped up their traffic patrol for the holiday weekend as they were expecting more than 2.7 million New Englanders to hit the road. The holiday enforcement continues through Monday night.
