NORTH HAVEN, Conn. — A truck driver was charged with driving under the influence after a crash that shut down the highway for hours Wednesday night.
Dennis Goncalves Medeiros, 46, was charged with:
- Risk of Injury to a Child
- Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree
- Operating Under the Influence
- Failure to Maintain Lane
He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court in November.
The crash, which involved a tractor-trailer, closed I-91 North between Exits 12 and 13. All lanes were closed due to debris in the roadway, North Haven Fire officials said.
Police said he had been traveling on I-91 northbound, just before Exit 13, when the tractor trailer began to swerve across all three lanes on the roadway. The tractor trailer made initial contact with a metal guard rail on the left median, at which point the tractor trailer lost a left rear tire. The tractor trailer then swerved across all three lanes and hit the wire-rope guard rail on the right shoulder of the highway. The metal beams being transported on the flat-bed of the tractor trailer were fell onto the roadway.
I-91 northbound was shut down for approximately two hours, causing significant traffic delays, while the metal debris was cleared from the highway.
