ROCKY HILL, Conn. — A tractor-trailer rollover has caused delays on Interstate 91 northbound between exits 23 and 24 in Rocky Hill.
Two lanes in the area have been closed for nearly nine hours.
Police say the crash happened about 12:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the truck, owned by R&L Carriers, was carrying lithium batteries and give, 275 gallon totes of flocculant, a non-hazardous chemical used for water treatment.
All of the flocculants spilled throughout the trailer and leaked out onto the ground according to DEEP. No drinking water is affected, but DEEP said the environmental impact at this time is "somewhat significant".
DEEP said clean-up will take most o the day with at least one lane likely to be blocked.
Will Healey, DEEP, said, "You know, the concern was there's a catch basin nearby that leads to a waterway. Thankfully, the flocculant was cut off before it reached the catch basin. It is a significant impact in terms of the amount that has been released, but thankfully it has been cut off from reaching that catch basin. And we can also report that no drinking water is affected by this."
At this time it's unknown what caused the crash.
This is a developing story.
