NEW YORK — Amtrak announced Saturday evening that it restored its rail service between Boston and New York City around 9 p.m.
The tracks between New York City's Penn Station and Boston's South Station were closed for most of the day.
A broken circuit breaker resulting from a lighting strike caused a power outage on all tracks between Union Station in New Haven and Penn Station in New York. Amtrak announced on Saturday morning that personnel were troubleshooting the issue and hoped to resolve it soon, but the malfunction lasted longer than expected.
“Amtrak is communicating directly with impacted customers about this service interruption and (is) offering options for rebooking their travel plans,” Amtrak said, in a release on Saturday, before the problem was fixed.
As of Saturday evening, Trains 65 (Boston to Newport News, Va.) and 66 (Roanoke, Va. to Boston) are operating on time as scheduled. On Sunday, most trains will operate will operate on schedule, Amtrak said. However, Trains 54, 142, 162, 150 and 157 are cancelled due to equipment locations at the time of the service disruption.
In the release at 9:50 p.m., Amtrak said it is communicating directly with customers impacted by the adjustments and offering options for rebooking their travel plans.
"Amtrak apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the disruption," the release said.
Customers with reservations on impacted trains should be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day, Amtrak said.
Amtrak said it will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling the reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
