NEW HAVEN, Conn. — While most interior decorators stay far away from cheesy designs, Jason Bunce has embraced them. They are in every room of his newly opened Airbnb.
Bunce, the owner of the Skull & Combs Salon on State Street in New Haven, recently entered the Airbnb game.
Three months ago, he started “Apizza New Haven” Airbnb – a pizza-themed two-bedroom condo atop his salon.
“New Haven has a great pizza culture and I know there's a lot of people coming from all over the country to experience it," Bunce said.
The wallpaper is pizza-themed; the art is pizza-themed; pizza tchotchkes adorn the 1,100-square-foot space; the dining area is an actual pizza restaurant booth that harkens back to the neighborhood joints of 46-year-old Bunce’s youth.
“It’s a time capsule of a pizza restaurant of my youth, something nostalgic and vintage and something that has brought me down memory lane,” Bunce said.
The Airbnb is just steps from legendary Modern Apizza and a hop from Wooster Street home to both Sally’s Apizza and Frank Pepe’s Apizza.
Colin Caplan, the owner of Taste of New Haven Food Tours offering popular pizza pilgrimages around the Elm City and is widely considered the “Pizza Guru” of the town said, “There is no better place to have a pizza-themed Airbnb than New Haven.”
"We think that getting people to New Haven through pizza is the way to go, now they have a place to stay that’s themed around pizza so we’re happy about that," he added.

Bunce said he is getting visitors from around the country and getting top reviews for his Airbnb.
“The experience for people is probably the most rewarding thing for me -- to know that all this hard work and creativity is making an impact on people," he said.
