GLASTONBURY, Conn. — At the Central Rock Gym in Glastonbury, the focus is on going up!
“It is not only a physical challenge but a mental one as well,” says UCONN Climbing alum, Nicole Morson.
Her friend and former teammate, Alyssa Benoit agrees, “I like the adrenaline rush, you get good cardio as well when you go up there.”
Lynnea Rochez is a manager and climbing instructor, “I love the community, I love being part of the community, I love teaching, that’s how I got into this is through teaching,”
With tips from the UConn climbing alums, Keith McGilvery and Margaux Farrell tackled the wall. “Start slow, come with a friend, and if you get nervous, you can always come back down,” says Benoit.
First-timers can climb afternoons during the week and all day on the weekends.
“Everyone here is at a different level than you, so it is almost silly to compete with each other, there is always someone who is going to be better than you,” says Morson.
There are daily programs for kids 3 1/2 to 18. “Kids are just super good at climbing, at home you tell them they can’t climb on things and here we tell them to climb on anything you want,” says Rochez.
Summer climbing teams are open to kids 4 and up. “Know your limits and learn how to fall safely,” says Benoit.
A Standard Day Pass is $25. An individual membership is $89 a month and the family pass is $135.
