HARTFORD, Conn. — Commuters and travelers, rejoice. Exit 28 on Interstate-91 northbound in Hartford reopened to motorists Friday night after being closed since June 2019.
After three years of the exit being closed off, drivers can now directly access Route 15 southbound from I-91 north instead of taking a detour.
The exit was closed as work on the Charter Oak Bridge was being done. There's still work to do on the bridge, and it should be done by November.
The goal of the ongoing Charter Oak Bridge Project is to reduce traffic by reducing the weaving maneuvers drivers have had to make in the past. As many as 80,000 drivers go on the bridge per day, officials said.
As work continues on the bridge, the area will remain a construction zone. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is asking drivers to remain cautious when driving through work zones: "Slow down, keep a safe distance, and stay alert."
