For summer tourist locations, the challenge of coping with COVID-19

From the Trolley Museum in East Windsor to the Mystic Aquarium, tourists are still visiting these Connecticut staples.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Call it a slow roll at the Connecticut Trolley Museum in East Windsor but, their feeling there is that their all-electric fleet is building up steam this Summer. With all the restrictions from COVID-19, the non-profit Trolley Museum is able to run their cars with a limited capacity of passengers but that is progress says business manager Gina Maria Alimberti.

“It’s been challenging,” Alimberti said, “but there are ways to stay open there are ways people can come here for a safe experience and that’s what we have learned these last few months.”

After being shuttered for months, the Mystic Aquarium, among the most visited tourist spots in the state, is open under COVID guidelines.

Rodney Daniel the senior director of operations and guest experiences said, “I think it’s going great, it’s a lot better than we expected. We are at about forty percent of what our attendance is for this time of year.”

Randy Fiveash the director Connecticut’s Office of Tourism said there are no numbers yet on how visits have dipped in the Summer of 2020 but, given the current circumstances, “we’ve actually come a long way.” Fiveash said the Tourism Office’s latest on-line and on-air campaign has helped.

“Business isn’t where is was last Summer, we know that,” Fiveash said, “but from the perspective of where we were (in the Spring) it’s on the uptick.”
