NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Travelers flying out of Tweed New Haven Airport will soon have more parking options – which city officials hope is the first step to addressing nearby residents’ concerns with the airport.
Starting Friday, travelers will be able to part at Union Station in New Haven and from there take a shuttle to and from the airport. Parking will be $10 a day.
“I like it it’s really good it’s better than that New York traffic that’s where I normally go it’s much better,” said Ashton and Kathleen Lockhart of Stratford.
“It’s super convenient, it’s the first trip for our dog. Everything has been really convenient so far,” said Just Ducci of Avon.
While passengers have been loving Avelo Airlines flying from the airport, neighbors near Tweed Airport have been complaining about increased traffic issues near their homes, along with noise and other issues related to the airport.
There is a proposal to expand the airport, however, some nearby residents say it is already too noisy and brings unwanted traffic to their neighborhoods.
“It wasn’t that busy when we decided to live here 20 years ago and now it’s increasing and we’re afraid of the expansion making it much worse,” said a resident at a recent meeting with airport officials and residents.
City leaders said they heard the concerns loud and clear and hope the new parking option at Union Station passengers will help alleviate some of the concerns. Travelers who travel by train can also take the shuttle to and from the airport.
“Between taking cars off the roads, offering ways people can get to the airport using public transportation, we are not only expanding the airport in the right way we are doing both at the same time,” said an airport official.
The new parking option begins Friday, July 1 and can be scheduled online.
