TSA warning fliers wrapped gifts may have to be opened by agents instead of loved ones

If you’re flying out of Bradley to see family and friends for Christmas, you’re one of about 110,000 people filing through the TSA gates over the next week.

Thousands of people are expected to fly in and out of Bradley International Airport over the next week as we close in on Christmas day.

Nationally, experts say this holiday season is on course to bring a record amount of people to the skies.

If you’re flying out of Bradley to see family and friends for Christmas, you’re one of about 110,000 people filing through the TSA gates over the next week. Airport Spokesperson Brian Spyros tells us they are prepared for the influx of travelers with extra staff on hand in all areas.

“Leading up to the holiday we have a lot of people traveling today, tomorrow, and Saturday," Spyros said. "We will then see people passing through again late next week as they head home."

Whether you are flying to somewhere cold and snowy or looking for a tropical getaway, Bradley is packed today with people heading to their favorite spots.

"While we all know Santa will be bringing the best gifts on Christmas morning, airport leaders say the gifts you choose to bring in your luggage are at risk of being opened a few days too early.

“People need to keep in mind that if one of those items sets off a detection machine, a TSA agent may have to open that wrapped gift," Spyros said. "So the recommendation from TSA is to put those items in a bag, so if it’s taken out it can be put back together or just wrap the gifts when you get to your destination."

It’s also recommended to check in to your flight 24 hours early on your airline's phone app, have your passport or license somewhere safe and accessible, and know the TSA busy times for your airport to ensure smooth travel.

Always remember to leave a few extra minutes to park when you arrive if you’re leaving your car here, those spots fill up fast, especially the closer you get to Christmas Day.
