The city previously recommended a voluntary evacuation to start at 10 p.m. Saturday, August 21.

GROTON, Connecticut — The city of Groton issued a mandatory evacuation order Saturday afternoon for several shoreline roads as Hurricane Henri continued its path toward Connecticut.

An emergency shelter at Fitch High School (101 Groton Long Point Road, Groton) opened for residents seeking shelter at 6 p.m.

"Emergency personnel may be unable to reach residents who choose to stay in the home during the storm due to potential flooding," the city said in a statement.

COVID precautions will still be in place and citizens are required to wear face masks while in the shelter. Prior to entering the shelter staff will screen each individual with COVID-related questions as well as a temperature check.

Staff will provide additional guidance as needed. For residents planning to seek refuge at the shelter, they should consider bringing the following:

  • Medicine
  • Additional clothing
  • Special dietary needs
  • Cell phones with charge cords and headphones
  • Portable electronics with headphones and any other items you may require that are not listed.

Pets are allowed at the shelter and the Town Animal Control Officers will be available to help you with your pet-related needs.

They say if anyone has a boat moored off East Shore Avenue and needs a temporary slip, they can contact 860-306-9753.

The evacuation route for Groton Long Point is up Sound Breeze Avenue to Duryea Drive.
