CT Flooding: Roads closed in Oxford, Ansonia, Easton

Oxford took the brunt of the damage from Sunday's storms washing out major roadways.

OXFORD, Connecticut — Sunday's heavy rainfall caused massive flooding throughout western Connecticut and on Monday, cities and towns throughout the area were working to mitigate the worst of it.

In Oxford, two women were killed in separate incidents when they were washed away near their vehicles. The first happened in early afternoon. Firefighters attempted to rescue a woman when a surge of water hit and carried her downstream. At least one firefighter had to be rescued and suffered minor injuries

In the second incident, a woman was in a car in a flooded area. Officials said she got out and tried to walk through the water and made it to a sign. As firefighters attempted to get to her, she lost her grip and was swept away.

State police confirmed that emergency responders located the women's bodies on Monday morning.

The Oxford Resident Trooper’s Office resumed normal operations at 429 Oxford Rd., Oxford, around noon on Tuesday.

Buildings were also washed away in Oxford, cars flooded, and major roadways were underwater. On Monday, the Oxford Center Volunteer Fire Company, which had spent Sunday night and Monday morning on rescue efforts, announced that a number of major roadways in town were still closed due to damage.

Fire officials are asking drivers to avoid washed out roads and bridges until they can be properly assessed.

In Easton, Rock House Rd at Pine Tree Rd, Wells Hill Rd at the bridge and North Park Ave in the area of Maple Rd remain closed until further notice. Use caution on Deerfield Dr. as one lane is washed out.
