CONNECTICUT, USA — A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6pm, but will be reissued for Saturday with a gusty wind midday. Winds will be gusting to near 30 mph.
As of Thursday, the US Drought Monitor Report shows a worsening drought across the state with now 23% of the state in a severe drought. Windsor Locks is running 9" below average season-to-date! Yikes!
The dry stretch will continue into the weekend. An abundant amount of sunshine is in the forecast along with milder temperatures. It will be warm for November with highs reaching the 60s.
There will be a couple of opportunities for rain this upcoming week. The first system is expected to push on through on Monday with some showers. However, rainfall will be very light. The more significant chance for rain is on Thursday as a large coastal system pushes up the coast.
The Leonid meteor shower peaks this weekend.
The Leonids, like all meteor showers, are from rock fragments that enter our atmosphere and burn up. These are left from comets passing through our solar system. The Leonids were discovered in 1865 and 1866 by both Ernst Temple and Horace Tuttle for which comet Temple-Tuttle was named.
Fortunately, we will have a mostly clear sky this weekend, but you'll have to compete with the light of the full moon which is high in the sky by midnight.
Much above-average temperatures for this weekend, but trending cooler as we get deeper into the week.
There is some hope for rain by Thursday and Friday. Hopefully it develops. Until then, the drought situation will get worse before it gets better.
