CONNECTICUT, USA — A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6pm, but will be reissued for Saturday with a gusty wind midday.
As of Thursday, the US Drought Monitor Report shows a worsening drought across the state with now 23% of the state in a severe drought. Windsor Locks is running 9" below average season-to-date! Yikes!
With about 15 days left in the month, we are definitely in the running for the driest fall on record. Records go back to 1905 for the Hartford area.
The weekend will be milder by afternoon with highs in the low-mid 60s. Plenty of sunshine. THIS is the weekend to get final yard cleanup done or hang Christmas lights.
The Leonid meteor shower peaks this weekend.
The Leonids, like all meteor showers, are from rock fragments that enter our atmosphere and burn up. These are left from comets passing through our solar system. The Leonids were discovered in 1865 and 1866 by both Ernst Temple and Horace Tuttle for which comet Temple-Tuttle was named.
Fortunately, we will have a mostly clear sky this weekend, but you'll have to compete with the light of the full moon which is high in the sky by midnight.
Tonight's full moon is a supermoon, the last one for 2024. You'll have to wait until next Oct, Nov., and Dec. for the only supermoons of 2025.
There is some hope for rain by Thursday and Friday. Hopefully it develops. Until then, the drought situation will get worse before it gets better.
