CONNECTICUT, USA — Heavy wind and rain marched across Connecticut between Sunday night and Monday morning, causing trees to tumble, schools to close across the state and thousands to lose power.
The National Weather Service predicted up to 5 inches of rain in some parts of the region. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were forecast for the southeast New England coast, the Weather Service said.
The number of outages has been growing throughout the morning. Eversource reported 85,111 customers and United Illuminating reported 1,519 customers were without power as of 9:15 a.m. Monday.
Due to the outages and downed wires and trees across the state, almost 125 school districts either delayed classes or canceled them outright for the day.
A Guilford police cruiser was damaged after it was struck by a tree Monday morning, the department said on Facebook. Guilford police went on to say several roads were closed in town including parts of Durham Road and Long Hill Road.
They asked that drivers use caution due to debris in roadways and pooling of water.
The Wolcott Police Department reported several branches down on local roadways as well as large puddles. There was also a mudslide causing debris to run into the roadway on top of Wolcott Road.
The South Windham Fire Department posted to their Facebook showing wires down on Plains Road between Route 32 and Alice Street. In the picture the department posted, smoke was seen as the wires burned.
Naugatuck Fire Department posted to their Facebook that Andrew Mountain Road at Andrew Avenue was closed due to wires and trees down after a pole snapped.
