Groton residents evacuate ahead of Hurricane Henri

Shore Avenue, South Prospect Street, Beach Pond Road, Jupiter Point Road and Pine Island Road are under mandatory evacuation orders.

GROTON, Conn — The City of Groton urged residents on several streets to evacuate by Saturday night as Hurricane Henri approaches.

Shore Avenue, South Prospect Street, Beach Pond Road, Jupiter Point Road and Pine Island Road are under mandatory evacuation orders.

Some residents we spoke with are heeding the warning placed on their doors and packing up to head out.

“For safety, yeah, I think it’s good that she’s getting out of here,” said Arthur Ramirez who was helping his girlfriend evacuate.

On the other hand, other residents in the Jupiter Point area, like Matthew Longino, are planning on staying out.

“No, we’re here. Sun’s going to come up in the afternoon tomorrow. We’ll deal with it,” Longino said. “Hopefully it’s not as bad as Sandy. So we made preparations: got everything out of the front yard, put all the patio furniture away, pulled the boat out of the water.”

Still, state leaders are sending out this message:

“Stay safe, stay home,” Gov. Lamont said. “I don’t think the name Henri or category 1 do justice to the severity of what this storm could represent. Brenda just reminded me that superstorm Sandy was not even a category 1 hurricane and look what that exacted on our state.”

Governor Lamont also reminding residents to get gas, prepare several days worth of food and check on your neighbors as Henri approaches.

The American Red Cross has a shelter set up at Fitch High School for residents in need of a place to stay. They also have snacks, water and electricity for charging devices.
