CANTERBURY, Conn. — During the height of Tropical Storm Henri, much of the town of Canterbury was in the dark as winds and rain toppled tree limbs onto power lines and blocked some roads.
By Sunday night, crews from all over the country were at work in Eastern Connecticut to get the lights back on. Jamie Kleinman, who lives on Cemetery Road in Canterbury was still out of power on Monday morning, but crews were working to amend that.
Kleinman said, “if this was the worst of it, in some ways, I think we got off pretty easy.”
Eversource commissioned utility crews from around the country in anticipation of the major hit that avoided the state.
In Canterbury alone, teams from Missouri, Oklahoma City, and Nashville were in the area helping to put power back on.
“I think we are all a little surprised and a little relieved,” said Eversource spokesman Mitch Gross.
Gross added, “people talk about have you're over-prepared? No, absolutely not, we prepared based on the best information available and planned accordingly.”
In nearby Brooklyn, 79-year old Sandi Poirier was celebrating the fact that lights were back on in her neighborhood, “I’m old,” laughed Poirier, then added, “but I’m happy for my elderly neighbors, they’re older than me and it’s just nice that they have power back.”
Eversource noted they restored power to about 60 thousand customers during the storm, and, by Monday evening more than 98 percent of customers in Canterbury had their power restored.
