HARTFORD, Conn. — Fall is here, but it seems like peak foliage is lagging a bit behind schedule in most of New England.
It was a very warm and very dry summer, which are conflicting factors. A warmer summer can delay peak color, but a drier summer can cause some trees to turn early.
September flipped the switch and turned wet in much of the region. Periods of rain likely helped extend or save the foliage season in spots.
Color is peaking now in the mountains of northern New England. This upcoming weekend should be the best to see the color in the higher terrain of northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
There's still quite a bit of green in southern New England. Color change is accelerating, but peak is still at least a couple of weeks away. Along the south coast and Long Island Sound, it will take until November.
In central New England, bold colors are starting to appear, and peak should be closer to the holiday weekend.
Peak color will be a bit later than these average dates in Connecticut.
