Nor'easter brings heavy snow, wind to Connecticut: Live updates

We have updates on road conditions and the latest on the forecast as the nor'easter heads over Southern New England

CONNECTICUT, USA — A nor'easter is hammering down on New England today and with it comes strong winds and a foot or more of snow for some places. 

The storm is expected to end by the evening across the state.

Roads 

A tractor-trailer ban was lifted at midnight.

Trains

Metro-North has suspended service on the Danbury, New Canaan, and Waterbury lines. Limited service will be run out of New Haven with a train every hour but the rail line tells travelers to expect delays and to avoid unnecessary travel. Head here for more details. 

Amtrak has modified its schedule for Saturday. All Acela service operating between Washington D.C. and New York/Boston is canceled. All Northeast Regional and Vermonter Service between Boston and New York is canceled. There will be limited Northeast Regional Service between New York and Washington D.C., points south. Airlines

All flights out of Bradley Airport are canceled.

Flights for Avelo Airlines have been canceled out of Tweed New Haven for Saturday and Sunday

Ferry

All departures for the Cross Sound Ferry have been canceled Saturday due to the storm, expected to reopen at 5:15 a.m. Sunday. Travelers with questions regarding their reservations can call 860-443-5281 or 631-323-2525. More details here.

7:32 p.m.

A fake Facebook page in West Haven riles city workers

6:26 p.m.

Gov. Ned Lamont said the state will lift its travel ban on tractor-trailers on highways at 11:59 on Saturday. 

This is being done in coordination with neighboring states that also implemented similar travel bans during the storm.

“While the storm appears to be subsiding, the roads remain slick, and we continue to strongly urge everyone to stay off the roads if they can while the plow crews work to clear them,”  Lamont said.

5:50 p.m.

The Hartford Wolfpack game Saturday night is still on. Ticketholders who decide not to attend can take advantage of Flex Vouchers, valid for any other regular season game this season. 

5:45 p.m.

CT Transit expects to resume service Sunday morning. CT Rail will also be running but advises caution at the stations. 

Amtrak will be running a modified service on Sunday.

Mount Southington Ski area is open.

Norfolk Public Information Officer John Barbagallo discusses how the storm is impacting the northwest corner of the state. Towns like Norfolk and Canaan are not expected to get as much snow as the rest of the state due to the storm's track. 

1:40 p.m. 

Eversource spokesperson Mitch Gross discusses the storm's impact on the state's powerlines and trees. Outages have remained at the lower end compared to other storms. 

1 p.m. 

Chris Herb with the Connecticut Energy Marketer's Association provides tips to make sure people stay safe as they remove the snow from around their homes following the storm.

Gov. Lamont in an afternoon update again urged people to remain off the roads if possible. He said the good news seemed to be less strain on trees with the lighter snow, despite the wind, so power outages have remained on the lower end.

CT DOT Commissioner provides update on the road conditions across the state. He also commented on a reported tractor-trailer crash this morning, explaining why some trucks may still be on the road despite the tractor-trailer ban in place.

Some residents were out and about in the snow and wind this morning in Stonington as the snowstorm continues on. FOX61's Angelo Bavaro catches up with them this morning.

Westfarms Mall in West Hartford will be closed Saturday due to the weather.

8 a.m.

Wild times in eastern CT at the moment with that very heavy snow band (dark blue color). Still snowing everywhere else, but it's really coming down in the eastern half of CT!

Mayor Michael Passero of New London provides an update into the city's response to the story. New London County is under a blizzard warning as the storm bears down on the state. 

7:40 a.m. 

Guilford police is "thinking about snowmageddon" and poking some fun at the winter storm on Facebook.

"We have busted out the AT-ATs for the duration of the storm…. So if you don’t have one, you should probably avoid the roads.

The parking ban is in effect this weekend as DPW and DOT will be trying to clear roads through at least Sunday. If your vehicle is blocking emergency snow removal, it will be towed…. Or possibly stepped on by the AT-AT… (they are not operator friendly)

A crash is reported in Hamden on Dixwell avenue with an overturned car. EMS reports the driver is "fine."

7:20 a.m. 

W. HARTFORD - Crash (Jackknifed) on I-84 Westbound between Exits 40 and 39A. The left lane is closed.

CSP Sgt. Dawn Pagan provides an update on the roads for residents who must travel this morning. However, if you can, officials are asking people to stay home to avoid dangerous driving conditions. 

6:45 a.m. 

A heavier snow band has set up in eastern Connecticut.

6:38 AM: A heavier snow band is beginning to set up in eastern CT (shaded in that dark blue color). The next few hours is when the bulk of the accumulation will be happening. If you have to be out, give yourself a ton of extra time!

East Lyme water main break

A water main break was reported on South Edgewood Raod in East Lyme. Officials said the water will be shut off until the repairs are complete. Affected residents may experience dirty water. 

6 a.m. 

At this time, United Illuminating is reporting 61 outages with Eversource reporting 0 outages. 

5:45 a.m. 

Roads are already covered in snow across the state as the winds howl. 

5:30 a.m.
