Connecticut agencies send teams to assist with Hurricane Ida relief efforts

As Hurricane Ida makes landfall, resources from Connecticut are ready to assist those in need, even hundreds of miles away.

FARMINGTON, Conn. — As Hurricane Ida makes landfall, resources from Connecticut are ready to assist those in need, even hundreds of miles away.

The American Red Cross deployed local volunteers to the Gulf Coast Friday and Saturday to assist with relief efforts. More teams will be traveling to the region in the next couple of weeks as well.

The Red Cross has volunteers from across Connecticut on the ground in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama.

“It’s all about a team effort. They’re getting shelters ready. They’re packing supplies, getting them ready for where they’re going to be needed,” Red Cross Regional Communications Andreina Sosa.

Stamford-based organization Americares is also sending a team of experts to assist areas impacted by the storm.

“Americares has deployed an emergency response team to Southeast Texas in advance of the storm and the team is on the ground and coordinating with national, state, and local partners,” VP of Emergency Programs Kate Dischino said.

She said the team will be helping support health care providers and addressing the health needs of survivors.

“There’s a number of mandatory evacuations in place and we are seeing emergency shelters filling up quickly and we’re already seeing hundreds of thousands of people without power and anticipate power outages for days and weeks to come,” Dischino said.

Eversource is also sending 40 line crews from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to help restore power as the storm is expected to cause major outages. Crews are expected to head out Monday morning.
