Hundreds of people looking to escape the heat flocked to shoreline beaches like Hammonassett State Beach in Madison where temperatures for temperatures near 80 degrees and a steady ocean breeze. Friday also marks the third day of extreme weather protocol in the state of Connecticut. Wednesday and Thursday children like Carter, who live inland, were forced to cool down in less exciting ways.

But Friday, sand was the name of the game.
“I like to bury myself,” he said.
Mom Samone Silva also cooling off in the Sound.
“It’s been so hot,” Silva said. “I think all year long you forget how hot it can really get.”
People who couldn’t make it to a body of water sought refuge in libraries, senior centers, and churches that have been serving as cooling centers in cities like Waterbury and Hartford since Wednesday.
Molly Monocchi, Wallingford said, “Days have been horrible. I have a pet snake so I need to keep my room pretty warm so I’m always sweating. I go in the water and it’s cold tho.”
Campers are wrapping up a week of weather extremes from downpours to heat.
Steve Kozikowski of East Hampton said it’s been a relaxing week at the beach campsite.
“Staying in the shade, going to the beach, going in the water," said Kozikowski.
“It’s been cool enough to get a good night’s sleep so that’s important,” said three-generation camper Dan Lundgren of Northford.
