MERIDEN, Conn. — A band of severe thunderstorms shook up the Friday morning commute across Connecticut, bringing flash floods to roads and thousands of power outages.
More bands of heavy rain will pass by the state during mid-morning but will clear out for the afternoon and evening.
As of 11:45 a.m., over 2,800 Eversource customers were left in the dark. UI has two customers in the dark.
The biggest aftermath of the storms was flooding. Residents in Meriden witnessed flooding in the streets, as cars driving by had to wade through puddles and flooding in the neighborhoods.
Municipal crews had to clean out garbage floating along Summer St. in Meriden. The town said trash receptacles were overturned by the flooding.
Kemp in Naugatuck sent FOX61 a video of a car on fire, possibly due to the downed wires that were touching the car. Snapping and buzzing of electricity could be heard as the flames surround the car parked on the street.
Fire crews were called to the Holiday Inn Express and On The Border restaurant in Rocky Hill along Silas Deane Highway, where the parking lots and the first floor of the hotel were flooded.
Crews used an inflatable rescue boat to check on the vehicle to make sure no one was inside.
