Drivers urged to slow down as snow covers roads in northwest hills

Emergency responders said recent crashes could have been prevented if speed wasn’t a factor.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Elevation is the name of the game Monday as a mix of rain and snow fell across Connecticut. The higher the elevation, the more snow on the ground. The snow was ideal for snowball making and schools were closed in Norfolk and Winsted as plow crews were out in full force beginning at 5 a.m.

A morning journey in elevation up Route 44 from New Hartford to Winsted brought a change from rain to snow.

“There were a lot of people who thought the schools were crazy for canceling school today but you can see they made a good decision,” said Norfolk Spokesman Jon Barbagallo. “We’ve had a number of accidents recently. Some snow related some not but all speed-related. So, I would suggest people take their time especially if they’re driving through this neck of the woods.”

Emergency responders said recent crashes could have been prevented if speed wasn’t a factor. They urge people driving through the northwest hills to take it slow.

“Too much I don’t like but it’s gorgeous right now. It’s nice to be in the icebox when it’s snowing,” said postal worker Jenna Brown. “Today was an appropriate snow day to not have school. Sometimes that’s not the case but the roads are not good right now, especially the side roads.”

A winter wonderland for the eyes, but mild for municipal sand and salt budgets that prep for several massive storms with a foot or more snow per season. That hasn’t happened yet this winter.

“The plow drivers aren’t getting the overtime that they are hoping for, so little storms like this will help everybody,” said Barbagallo.

Little in Norfolk but massive comparatively. This is one of few places where snow is even sticking and some locals welcome that.

“I’m an ice fisherman, which has not been conducive to ice fishing this year, you know what I’m saying,” Mike Coleman, Colebrook. “If I was a kid, I’d be happy I wasn’t in school.”
