Trees, powerlines downed as strong, gusty winds sweep across Connecticut

Gusty winds have brought down trees and powerlines across the state. Madison saw a gust recorded at 53 mph.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Strong winds and rain have been causing issues across the state Thursday night into Friday morning. 

A High Wind Warning is in effect for portions of the state as gusts as high as 53 mph were recorded in Madison.

As of 6:20 p.m., Eversource reported 637 outages while United Illuminating has zero customers without power.

Around 3:30 a.m. a tree fell onto a car on Crystal Lake Road in Tolland, officials tweeted. One lane is currently opened while crews work on removing the tree. 

A tree also fell in Lisbon. State police said Route 169 in the area of Town House Road will be closed while crews work.

Connecticut's Department of Transportation also reported other road closures including North Stonington's Pendleton Hill Road (Route 49). A utility pole was reportedly down in the area, CT DOT said. The road has since been reopened.

In New Hartford, US 202 is closed by the reservoir, just before the Canton town line due to a tree and wires down in the roadway.

Once the showers move out, skies will clear out and temperatures will drop. Gusty winds will remain for the rest of the day today with falling temperatures by the afternoon.
