HARTFORD, Conn. — People across Connecticut woke up to a wintry mess on the roads Thursday morning that caused several travel hiccups.
Snow returned to Avon where an icy mix coated the grass and roads. Conditions looked a bit heavier in Winsted where inches of snow accumulated on city streets, just in time for the morning commute.
Much of the same in Harwinton where the plow trucks arrived early to clear the layers of fresh powder, but cars still struggled to stay on the road, including a sedan that landed in a ditch.
In Litchfield, rescue crews responded to an overturned vehicle with at least one person trapped inside.
Then, police in Bloomfield warned drivers to stay clear of Duncaster Road, where a car flew into an Eversource utility pole. The company reported nearly 6,600 weather-related outages.
It was a snow day for children in places like Norfolk, who woke up to an overnight coating of winter weather. Other schools closed for the day are Canton Public Schools, Litchfield Public Schools, New Hartford Public Schools, Regional School District 7, 6 and 10, Stafford Public Schools, Suffield Public Schools, Tolland Public Schools, Torrington Public Schools, and Windsor Locks Public Schools.
Elsewhere in Connecticut, if snow wasn’t the problem, it was the flooding. Residents in Milford walked through what appeared to be a foot of rain, with floodwaters covering their ankles.

Cars did not have it easy either, as several drivers attempted to make it through flooded streets near the shoreline.
A similar scene in Stratford where rising waters closed the Exit 30 off-ramp along Interstate 95, with crews staying busy responding to several vehicles trapped on Surf Avenue.
State Police also reported several crashes on I-84 East from Hartford to Tolland due to the slippery and windy conditions.
But perhaps the biggest traffic impact was felt on I-91 in the Middletown area just before 7 a.m. Multiple rollover crashes slowed drivers in both directions for hours near exit 20, as crews worked to clear roads from scattered debris and overturned cars.
