WINDSOR LOCKS–Police have made an arrest after a December hit-and-run accident in Windsor Locks involving a police car.

On December 7 at 3:30 a.m. Windsor Locks police responded to reports that a group of about six people in two cars were acting suspiciously near Greenfield Avenue.

When the officer arrived, he tried to approach the first car on George Street, a black Land Rover with tinted windows, but when he got out of his car the suspect turned off the headlights and accelerated at the officer, nearly hitting him and his car.

The officer then got back in his car and approached the second car, parking in front of it to prevent it driving off too. However, when he exited, the suspect car also accelerated towards him, causing the officer to wedge himself between his driver-side door and the inside of the car. The suspect sideswiped the cruiser before driving off.

The officer got in his car and pursued the suspect vehicles, but was hit a second time when one of the suspects intentionally packed into the front of his cruiser. The officer didn’t continue pursuing the suspects because he felt it was too dangerous.

The subsequent investigation revealed the vehicles had been involved in other crimes, including robberies, thefts of cars and other incidents ranging from Windsor Locks to Old Saybrook.

On December 10, Hartford Police alerted Windsor Locks Police that two stolen cars were found and chased by officers the day before, and that during the chase the suspects hit several police cruisers and another driver. The suspects jumped out of the car and ran after the car was damaged, and hid in a residence, but officers caught up with them and arrested them a short time later.

It was later confirmed that the driver in the Hartford pursuit was the same as the one in the Windsor Locks crash.

The suspect, who was arrested, is a 17-year-old male from Hartford, and he remains in juvenile custody.
