Mural artist teams up with Greater Hartford Arts Council to add new bright spot downtown

Corey Pane is teaming up with the Greater Hartford Arts Council, which has commissioned 11 new mural projects all happening in the next year.

HARTFORD, Conn. — A mural artist is teaming up with the Greater Hartford Arts Council to add a new bright spot to Downtown Hartford.

Corey Pane is working on his 12th mural project in the Greater Hartford area, eight stories in the air and located on the corner of Asylum and Ann Uccello Streets right by the XL Center.

“This is special to me because it has my family in it,” Pane said.

The Greater Hartford Arts Council has commissioned 11 new mural projects all happening in the next year. Various artists will all be part of creating the new murals.

Tiana Correa, the program officer at the Greater Hartford Arts Council, said that the council "actually had funding from the American Rescue Plan funds so a part of that initiative was actually meant to give artists the opportunity to bring their visions to life.”

Pane was busy putting the finishing touches on the 80-foot-tall, 45-feet-wide mural he has spent more than a week painting with spray cans in hand.

The still unnamed work features Pane’s wife as a child, along with their daughter. His wife is proudly wearing a Hartford Whalers jersey.

“I wanted to keep this nostalgic so people could see themselves in this [mural]," Pane said.

Both Correa and Pane see these projects as a vehicle to promote public art.

"It’s doing amazing things and [bringing] so much joy," Correa said.

“I feel like public art can just connect with so many people," Pane added. “And it feels amazing to make my mark in the city and in a place where I am from and hopefully this one will be a landmark for a long time.”
