NEW HAVEN, Conn. — It’s not your run of the mill summer camp on the Albertus Magnus College campus. For the 12th time, the college hosted high school juniors and seniors from around the area for its “Criminal Justice Camp”.
James Scott, a retired Army National Guardsman who was also a Sergeant with the Connecticut State Police, helps to put on the one-day camp. Scott, who is now an assistant professor of Criminal Justice at Albertus Magnus said, “We invite different practitioners – state, local police officers as well as the military to come to campus, and we invite high school students to interact with them.”
From a SWAT unit to a boat patrol, to K9 teams, and a fingerprinting station, the camp is meant to showcase a wide range of law enforcement specialties.
Jay Lawrie, who worked for the Connecticut Department of Corrections for decades and is now the chairman of the Albertus School of Criminology and Sociology said, “A lot of kids want to work in law enforcement, but they are not sure of what they want to do and maybe they aren’t aware of the opportunities. So, being in this environment, we think this gives (the students) that chance to open that lens.”
Malik Escoffery, who will be a senior at Notre Dame High School in West Haven said of Criminal Justice Camp, “Maybe this will give me a good idea of what I would like to do when I go to college.”
This year, the Criminal Justice Camp attracted 55 students from across the area. The one-day camp is free to all who sign up.
