'Wicked Tulips' farm in Preston boasts over 750,000 tulips for picking

The family farm is greeting guests for its fourth season.

PRESTON, Conn — Wicked Tulips Flower Farm is open in Preston, and, this year, they are boasting more than 750,000 tulips spread across six acres of the farm.

The Koeman family-owned farm is greeting guests for its fourth season.

“What color aren’t you going to see here?” laughed Keriann Koeman, who owns the farm with her husband, Jeroen.

“We are blooming again, it is the best time of the year for me and for the people around me,” Jeroen Koeman said.

“When you go to a garden everyone is always telling you not to pick, we want you to really get your hands dirty [and pick flowers],” Keriann Koeman added.

The Koemans, who also run two other tulip farms – both in neighboring Rhode Island – say they never get bored of seeing their guests’ reactions when they view the flowers in the fields for the first time.

“As soon as they see the colors, they give out a sigh and they really enjoy every second of it," Jeroen Koeman said.

“I love the shades of orange and peach, I also love the hot pink,” Keriann Koeman said.

For Jeroen Koeman, his tulip farms in Connecticut and Rhode Island are an extension of his upbringing in his native Holland. He and his wife brought the idea to the local area about a decade ago after a visit to his Dutch town.

Keriann Koeman added that this time of year is special but the window to see and pick the tulips is limited – the season lasts about three weeks.

“It’s here and then it’s gone,” she said and then added, “When you see people coming in who are so happy, it’s all worth it.”

Tickets must be reserved online in advance. Adult Tickets for the Wicked Tulips Flower Farm are $20 during the week and $23 on weekends – that includes picking 10 tulips to take home. To learn more, click here.
