How to make challah bread ahead of Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the New Year in Judaism, begins Oct. 2 at sundown.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Rosh Hashanah, known as the New Year in Judaism, begins at sundown on Oct. 2 and marks the start of the high holy days in the Jewish calendar. 

Rachel McEachern and Debbie Margolis of Chapel Haven's Judaism Club in New Haven show us how to make delicious challah bread, which you can try in your kitchen at home!

Challah bread

Ingredients

4.5 teaspoons of yeast

1 teaspoon of sugar

2 cups of warm water

2 eggs

1/2 cup of vegetable oil

1 cup of sugar

6 cups of flour (all-purpose or bread flour)

1 teaspoon of salt

1 egg, whisked for the egg wash

Instructions

1. Combine the yeast, 1 tsp of sugar and warm water in a large mixing bowl.  Set aside for 5-10 minutes for the yeast to activate.  The top will be frothy when it’s ready.

2. Mix egg, oil, and sugar together.

3. Then add the flour, salt, and mix until combined. Add additional flour if needed until the dough is no longer sticky or wet.

4. Knead the dough for 10 minutes or use an electric mixer. 

4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel and set aside to rise for 1.5 hours.

5. Preheat the oven to 350F.

6. Sprinkle a small amount of flour on your counter surface and transfer the risen dough. 

7. Divide your dough into three strands and braid. 

8. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and put the braided dough on top. 

9. Mix an egg and brush the wash on the top of your challah. Sprinkle on the topping of your choice and bake for 20-30 minutes.
