NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Vía Láctea, a non-dairy frozen dessert and pastry shop, opened a new location this week in New Haven’s Whitney-Audubon Retail and Arts District.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held with New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, Yale University Properties officials and Vía Láctea owners, chefs Reinaldo Sánchez and Lorivie Alicea, according to a release.
Founded in Puerto Rico, Vía Láctea has gained recognition for its plant-based frozen desserts. The business earned a 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards semifinalist nod in the Outstanding Bakery category.
The shop expanded its footprint in New Haven to cater to the community's growing demand for inclusive and sustainable food options.
“We chose the Whitney-Audubon District for its dynamic, diverse atmosphere,” said Sánchez. “It’s a perfect match for our mission to offer a variety of flavors that reflect different culinary traditions.”
Vía Láctea’s menu includes both classic and seasonal non-dairy frozen desserts, such as their signature "Home Planet" flavor—a coconut-milk base with butterfly pea flower, lime zest, matcha cake and cookie chunks. The shop also serves house-made pastries, including brownies, which complement their frozen treats.
The owners are emphasizing sustainability, with a no-plastic policy, and plan to continue innovating by incorporating locally sourced ingredients. Sánchez and Alicea are excited to create new flavors inspired by New Haven’s local produce, such as blueberries, pumpkins and corn.
“Our goal is to craft experiences, not just desserts,” said Alicea. “We want to celebrate community and sustainability while offering high-quality, creative treats that bring people together.”
