NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The outdoor apparel retail store L.L. Bean will be closing its storefront in downtown New Haven next month, the company confirmed Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the location at The Shops at Yale will close its doors on February 11. They said the decision came as the company evolves the “size and concept of our stores to best serve customers going forward.”

“While it is difficult to close a location, we are undertaking the closure with great care for our employees and with the knowledge we can continue to serve Connecticut customers online at llbean.com and at retail stores in Danbury and South Windsor,” a company statement said. “We value the loyalty our employees and customers – especially local students – have shown to us in New Haven for the past five years and are grateful to be part of their outdoor adventures.”

The statement also thanks Yale University Properties and The Shops at Yale's marketing team for their support.

While acknowledging the closure, the company also announced Tuesday that it will be opening a new retail store in Enfield in the fall of 2024. It will be the second location in Hartford County.

“Our purpose at L.L.Bean is to inspire and enable people to experience the restorative power of time outside, and we’re grateful to share our love for the outdoors with the Enfield community,” said Kristen Jones, district manager for L.L.Bean. “Connecticut has an abundance of outdoor destinations, from coastlines to mountain ranges to beautiful parks, and we hope that local customers will make L.L.Bean a stopping point on their adventures, wherever they might lead.”

The 25,000-square-foot retail shop will be located at Brookside Plaza, just off of Interstate 91. While the date for opening has not been announced, the company said it will start hiring for full-time and part-time positions in mid-2024.
